Lactoferrin

The power house protein

Research has shown that Lactoferrin is a key ingredient for helping our natural defence system, aiding the growth of beneficial bacteria and helping the body fight infections

There have been more than 8,800 clinical trials and papers on Lactoferrin and its benefits demonstrating the interest in this extraordinary protein and its possible uses. There are several different types of Lactoferrin-more than 50 gene sequences of lactoferrin have been found in 11 species of mammals. It is made of a single polypeptide chain with 691 amino acids.

Lactoferrin is an iron binding glycoprotein found in milk and is a vital element of our functioning immune system. Colostrum, the first milk produced by mothers after babies are born, contains high concentrations of Lactoferrin. It is also present in other bodily secretions, for example, tears, saliva, mucus as well as in the intestine, the respiratory tract and in white blood cells.

The ability of Lactoferrin to bind to high quantities of iron enables it to offer protection against pathogens and their metabolites by improving cell adherence and phagocytosis. It has proven antiviral, anti fungal, anti-inflammatory and iron regulating effects.

As an anti-microbial agent Lactoferrin acts in the first phase of infection as our first line of defence by helping to prevent viruses or bacteria from entering through the nose, mouth or eyes.

  1. Lactoferrin supports the immune response by depriving bacteria and viruses of the iron they need to exist, inhibiting their ability to reproduce  and invade healthy cells.

  2. Lactoferrin works as an anti-oxidant by binding and removing excess iron which can cause oxidative stress. It helps to protect your cells from damage caused by free radicals which can lead to illness.

  3. Lactoferrin supports a healthy gut microbiome, vital  for an effective immune system. It encourages the growth of beneficial bacteria and the formation of some probiotic strains.

  4. By reducing inflammation and encouraging cell regeneration Lactoferrin is beneficial to skin health, contributing to a clear complexion and radiant skin.
